Kalajdzic's injury-time goal saves Austria, forces 3-3 draw with Algeria

Sasa Kalajdzic's dramatic header in the 90th minute of injury time salvaged a 3-3 draw for Austria against Algeria in their final Group J match of the 2026 World Cup, securing their passage to the knockout stage.

The match was a rollercoaster of emotions. Austria took the lead through Marko Arnautovic in the 28th minute, but Algeria equalized just before halftime via Rafik Belghali. Marcel Sabitzer restored Austria's lead in the 55th minute, only for Algeria's captain Riyad Mahrez to score twice, including a goal in the 90th minute that seemed to seal the win for his team.

However, Kalajdzic's late equalizer ensured Austria advanced as one of the best third-placed teams. Algeria finished second in Group J with four points, while Austria also secured four points, advancing on goal difference. Both teams move on to the Round of 32.

Algeria will face Group I winners Argentina in the next round, while Austria faces a tough challenge against European champions Spain. Despite conceding a late lead, Algeria showcased a strong performance, and Austria demonstrated their resilience and fighting spirit until the final whistle.
