Kalimantan Wildfires Spread Haze to Malaysia, Firefighters Face Challenges

Wildfires raging across Kalimantan are creating a severe haze, with smoke reaching Malaysia and causing unhealthy air quality. In Serian, Sarawak, the Air Pollutant Index reached 203 on Friday, categorized as very unhealthy. Seven other Malaysian areas also recorded unhealthy air quality.

Firefighters in Kotawaringin Timur, Central Kalimantan, are battling numerous blazes simultaneously. They face significant obstacles, including water sources located far from the fires, a shortage of hoses, and malfunctioning equipment. Some fires are in remote areas, making suppression efforts time-consuming and labor-intensive.

The field conditions are not easy. Officers face challenges of distant water sources, hose limitations, and disruptions to the fire engines.

The scale of the fires is substantial, with over 1,317 hectares burned in Kotawaringin Timur as of August 18. The region has recorded 3,840 hotspots this year. The intense firefighting efforts have taken a toll on volunteers, with one individual requiring medical treatment for exhaustion and breathing difficulties.
