Kano bans ‘after-party’, ‘hot challenge’ activities at weddings

Kano State in Nigeria has banned "after-party" and "hot challenge" activities at wedding ceremonies and other social events held in event centers. The Kano State Censorship Board announced the immediate suspension, stating the measure is part of ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with regulations governing event activities.

The board's Executive Secretary, Abba El-Mustapha, explained that the trend of these activities, considered Western cultural practices, has been observed increasingly at weddings. "Consequently, the board has suspended the practice in order to safeguard the cultural, moral and religious values of the people of Kano State," the statement read. The decision aims to sanitize entertainment activities and ensure public events align with the state's cultural and religious values.

The attention of the board has been drawn to the growing trend of this activity, which is considered a Western cultural practice increasingly introduced into wedding celebrations in the state.

The board affirmed its welcome of positive and responsible entertainment that promotes morality and respects local culture and religious teachings. It directed all event centers, Masters of Ceremony, event planners, and other stakeholders to fully comply with the directive. Violators face legal sanctions. The board also urged residents to report any event center or MC found engaging in or promoting the suspended activities.
