Kano Chief Judge Frees Seven Inmates on Medical Grounds

Kano State Chief Judge Justice Dije Abdu Aboki has ordered the release of seven inmates on medical grounds following a review of 82 awaiting-trial cases. The jail delivery exercise took place at the Kurmawa and Goron Dutse Custodial Centres.

The Honourable Chief Judge of Kano State, Justice Dije Abdu Aboki has reviewed the cases of 82 Awaiting Trial Persons during a jail delivery exercise conducted at custodial centres in Kano State.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Nigerian Correctional Service Kano State Command, aims to expedite justice and safeguard the rights of individuals in detention. Officials stated that the Chief Judge examined cases of inmates held for extended periods without formal charges.

During the review, seven inmates were granted immediate release after careful consideration of their health conditions and circumstances. The Chief Judge stressed the importance of administering justice fairly and without delay. Correctional authorities encouraged the freed inmates to embrace their new freedom, remain law-abiding, and avoid future legal troubles.

The exercise is part of efforts to promote speedy dispensation of justice and ensure the protection of the rights of persons in custody.

The exercise is part of broader efforts to decongest custodial centers and ensure access to justice for all inmates. The Chief Judge was supported by various justice sector stakeholders, including the Chief Registrar, Director of Public Prosecutions, police representatives, and Legal Aid counsel.

During the exercise, the Chief Judge ordered the immediate release of 7 inmates on medical grounds, following due consideration of their health conditions and other circumstances surrounding their continued detention.
