Police arrest man for Qur’an desecration in Kebbi

The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested Abubakar Musa, a 29-year-old man, for his alleged involvement in the desecration of the Holy Qur'an in Zuru Local Government Area. Musa, a resident of Rafin Mose Village, faces charges including criminal conspiracy, abuse of religious books, use of spells and hypnosis, and inciting disturbance.

The incident reportedly occurred on August 9, 2026, around 7 p.m. in the Zango area of Zuru. According to a statement by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Bashir Usman, preliminary investigations indicate that Musa conspired with two other suspects, Rabi’u Tela and Hamza Zango, who are currently at large. The suspects allegedly dug a pit in Zarau Hassan’s room and buried a copy of the Holy Qur'an along with semen, kolanuts, underwear, dead animals, and other items described as fetish materials.

Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the two fleeing suspects, while Abubakar Musa remains in police custody and will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigation.

The police statement further alleged that the act was intended to make Zarau Hassan more submissive to her husband, Rabi’u Tela. The command stated that the circumstances surrounding the incident were capable of provoking a breach of peace among the Muslim faithful in the community. Efforts are underway to apprehend the two fleeing suspects, while Musa remains in police custody pending the conclusion of the investigation.

Commissioner of Police Umar Hadejia condemned the alleged act and issued a stern warning against any actions that threaten religious harmony and public order. He affirmed that the command would deal decisively with individuals whose actions jeopardize peaceful coexistence.
