Kano gov unveils sickle cell centre, disease control complex

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has officially opened a new Sickle Cell Centre dedicated to providing comprehensive care for individuals living with sickle cell disease. Alongside this, he unveiled a newly constructed office complex for the Kano State Centre for Disease Control (KNDCD), marking significant advancements in the state's healthcare infrastructure.

The Sickle Cell Centre will provide comprehensive care for people living with sickle cell disease, including free diagnosis, counselling, treatment, follow-up care and health education.

The Sickle Cell Centre is designed to offer a full spectrum of services, including free diagnosis, counseling, treatment, follow-up care, patient education, and specialized management, all under one roof. Governor Yusuf stated the government's commitment to ensuring patients receive necessary medicines and support to improve their well-being. "The Sickle Cell Centre will provide comprehensive care for people living with sickle cell disease, including free diagnosis, counselling, treatment, follow-up care and health education," he said.

The inauguration of the KNDCD office complex is seen as a crucial step in bolstering the state's disease surveillance and emergency response capabilities. The facility is expected to enhance the state's capacity to prevent, detect, and respond promptly to epidemic-prone diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and meningitis. Governor Yusuf expressed his hope that the center would be "judiciously utilised for the benefit of the people of Kano State."

In addition to these inaugurations, Governor Yusuf flagged off the distribution of 300 customized digital blood pressure monitors to public servants and political appointees. This initiative stems from concerns over hypertension-related sudden deaths among officials, aiming to encourage regular health checks for early detection and prevention. The governor also reaffirmed his administration's commitment to the free maternal and Accident and Emergency commodities program, which has reportedly saved numerous lives across the state. He commended various stakeholders, including healthcare workers and development partners, for their contributions to these healthcare advancements.

We procured these digital blood pressure monitors to encourage regular health checks among public servants and political appointees. Early detection and proper monitoring will help prevent avoidable deaths associated with hypertension.
