Kaohsiung builds three flood control mechanisms, boosting storage capacity to 15.75 million tons

Kaohsiung City is taking proactive and comprehensive measures to bolster its resilience against flooding as the rainy season approaches. Liberty Times reports that the city's Water Resources Bureau has established three integrated flood control mechanisms designed to manage heavy rainfall and mitigate potential damage.

These mechanisms include the utilization of five existing natural lakes and reservoirs, such as Chengcing Lake and Agongdian Reservoir, which contribute a significant storage capacity of 10.01 million tons. Complementing these are 26 newly constructed detention ponds, adding another 4.99 million tons of storage. Furthermore, the city is mandating the construction of detention ponds in large-scale development projects exceeding 2 hectares, which will add an estimated 750,000 tons of capacity, thereby minimizing the environmental impact of urban expansion on the local drainage infrastructure.
