Kaohsiung flood pond praised for effectiveness during heavy rains

A flood detention pond under construction in Kaohsiung's Fengshan district has drawn praise from local officials for mitigating the impact of recent heavy rainfall. Village chiefs in the Wenshan and Wenying neighborhoods reported to city councilor Lin Zhi-hong that areas historically susceptible to flooding remained dry during the downpour, attributing the relief to the partially completed Fengshan Bade Flood Detention Pond.

Lin Zhi-hong, who has advocated for the project for six years, inspected the site with the village chiefs during the heavy rains. They noted that the pond's water storage space, which is already complete, had functioned effectively. "If there were no detention pond, the rainwater might have flooded our homes," one chief reportedly said, highlighting the significant difference the infrastructure has made.

The Fengshan Bade Flood Detention Pond is being built on approximately 4.72 hectares of land, with a budget of 83.5 million yuan. The project, which began construction on October 1, 2023, is scheduled for completion by the end of this year. It is designed to channel runoff from the Fengsong Road and Jian'guo Road Section 2 storm drains, thereby reducing the drainage load downstream and enhancing flood control capabilities for the Jian'guo Road area, which has frequently experienced flooding during heavy rain events.
