Kaohsiung ice festival draws 40,000 visitors, boosts local businesses

Kaohsiung's "Da Gang Yue Bing" summer ice festival drew more than 40,000 visitors over its two-day run on July 18-19 in the Hamasing district.

The event successfully linked with the crowds attending concerts at Kaohsiung Arena, significantly boosting consumption in nearby business districts, restaurants, and hotels by over 30%. This synergy highlights the effectiveness of combining large-scale tourism events with concert economics and local commerce.

Kaohsiung Tourism Bureau Director Gao Minlin stated that "Da Gang Yue Bing" is more than just a summer ice event; it serves as a vital platform connecting harbor tourism, the industry, and local businesses. By drawing visitors to the Hamasing area, the festival also extended its reach to attractions like Xinbin Ding Ocean Kitchen, Pier-2 Art Center, and Cijin, encouraging longer stays and generating more local spending.

Guo Yao-wei, chairman of the "Hamasing Feng Hua Zai Xian Promotion Association," noted that the festival consistently brings steady crowds to the Hamasing business district each summer. This year, many attendees planned two- or three-day trips, further converting visitor numbers into local consumption. He expressed anticipation for continued collaboration with the city government on future themed events to promote tourism in Hamasing and the harbor area.

The festival also recognized winners for "Best Traditional Ice Dessert" and "Best Creative Ice Dessert." The "Best Traditional Ice Dessert" awards went to seven vendors, including "Zhizi Bing Cheng" and "Wu Jia Dou Hua." "Best Creative Ice Dessert" winners included "Huang Huang Coffee" and "Dong Xin Fried Ice Cream."
