Kaohsiung’s August Rainfall Sets Record at 1,712 Millimeters

Kaohsiung received nearly a year’s worth of rain in August. The city’s weather station recorded 1,712 millimeters, setting a record for the wettest August since complete records began in 1931.

The total represents 93% of Kaohsiung’s average annual rainfall of about 1,839 millimeters. It also stands at nearly four times the city’s average August rainfall of around 450 millimeters.

The rain really fell for too long and in too great an amount.

Rain fell on 18 days during the month. From Aug. 19, the weather station recorded rainfall for 13 consecutive days. The number of rainy days was not the highest in the city’s history for August, as 2018 saw rain on 26 days, but this year’s accumulated rainfall far exceeded the previous record.

August’s total surpassed the 1,600.5 millimeters recorded in August 2018 and became the highest monthly August rainfall in the station’s historical records. The weather station described the rain as lasting unusually long and falling in unusually large amounts.
