Two tropical depressions could become typhoons as Taiwan braces for five days of severe weather

Two tropical depressions may strengthen into typhoons, but neither currently appears likely to strike Taiwan directly, according to meteorologist Wu Der-Rong.

TD20, formerly Typhoon Saudel, was located over the waters off Guangdong and was expected to move east-northeast toward waters north of Dongsha Island. Wu said the system could turn as it approaches, reducing the likelihood of a direct impact on Taiwan.

TD27, meanwhile, was turning over waters south of the Ryukyu Islands before moving northwest and then northeast. It also had a chance to develop into a typhoon, but Wu said it posed no threat to Taiwan.

The more immediate concern is the weather between Sept. 1 and 5. European model simulations showed an active monsoon trough over the South China Sea and waters east of Taiwan. Moisture around Taiwan, combined at times with stronger southwest winds, could trigger strong convection, lightning, powerful gusts and sudden heavy rainfall.

All parts of Taiwan could see strong convective activity, with the highest chances in the south and southeast. Wu warned that several days of heavy rain could cause damage. From Sept. 6 to 10, a broad low-pressure circulation is expected to form east of Taiwan and shift moisture south toward the Bashi Channel. Weather conditions should improve noticeably, although occasional local showers may remain.
