Karachi police recover spent casing in Mir Raza Ali murder case

Police in Karachi announced a major breakthrough in the murder case of Mir Raza Ali, recovering a spent cartridge casing from the crime scene. Ali, a 25-year-old IBA graduate and owner of the eatery Wafflix, had gone missing on July 28 and was found dead the next day with a gunshot wound in bushes near Shahi Qila Ground in Gulistan-i-Jauhar.

Dr. Samiullah Soomro, Senior Superintendent of Police for the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) and head of the probe team, stated that the recovery of the casing was a "major breakthrough." He detailed a meticulously planned search operation involving a special team of four station house officers and 40 constables. Using metal detectors and other equipment, the team divided the area into sectors and employed specific search patterns to ensure complete coverage.

The recovered shell is considered a critical piece of physical evidence expected to be pivotal for forensic examination, ballistic analysis, and reconstructing the events leading to Ali's death. Investigators noted the casing's location was consistent with the projected bullet trajectory relative to the deceased's position.

Adding another layer to the investigation, a Karachi court has ordered the exhumation of Ali's remains. This decision follows a controversy over alleged loopholes in the initial post-mortem report. Ali's father had filed an application requesting a fresh, comprehensive examination by a medico-legal board of senior forensic experts and pathologists to ascertain the actual cause of death. The court directed the police surgeon and the Sindh health secretary to form the board promptly.
