Karen Rojo returns from Amsterdam to face fraud conviction

Former Antofagasta mayor Karen Rojo is returning to Chile this Wednesday from Amsterdam to begin serving a five-year prison sentence for fraud against the state. Rojo, who was convicted for financial irregularities during her term as mayor, boarded a flight from Amsterdam on Tuesday evening.

The legal case against Rojo centers on the misuse of public funds. Prosecutors presented evidence confirming that public resources were improperly used to hire external communication consultancy services. This advisory service was not intended for community benefit but rather to enhance the former mayor's public image for her re-election campaign.

Under the custody of two officers from the Investigations Police (PDI), Rojo is scheduled to land in Santiago on Wednesday morning. Upon arrival, she will be transferred to the General Directorate of Prisons (Gendarmería) to commence the effective fulfillment of her sentence, marking the end of her legal battle and the beginning of her incarceration.
