Karnataka minister B. Nagendra resigns amid allegations of misappropriating welfare funds

Karnataka minister B. Nagendra has resigned from his cabinet position, citing a desire to spare the Congress party embarrassment rather than admitting guilt in a funds misappropriation case. The resignation comes after weeks of opposition protests demanding his removal. Nagendra, who was the tribal welfare minister, faces allegations of involvement in the misappropriation of ₹89 crore from the Karnataka Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation. He stated his decision was voluntary and aimed at allowing him to clear his name without political pressure. Nagendra plans to tour constituencies to explain his position and counter what he calls the "Manusmriti mindset" of the opposition parties, the BJP and JD(S). He asserts that he has received a clean chit from state investigative agencies, though the Enforcement Directorate's investigation is ongoing.

The opposition parties, the BJP and JD(S), had intensified their pressure on the government, disrupting legislative sessions and organizing protests. They had announced a 10-day padayatra demanding Nagendra's resignation, which they intend to continue, citing other issues related to the 2024 case. Nagendra directly accused the BJP and JD(S) of using repeated lies to create a false narrative, framing their actions as rooted in a discriminatory ideology that opposes the rise of Dalits, women, minorities, and Adivasis. He contrasted this with his belief in the constitution established by B.R. Ambedkar.

It’s out of my own volition as I don’t want to embarrass the Congress party. I will tour the 15 Assembly constituencies reserved for the scheduled tribes in the state and explain how the Manuwadis (BJP and JDS) by repeating one lie have tried to make it the truth.

Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar acknowledged Nagendra's resignation after a media address but stated he would consult the party high command before making a final decision. Shivakumar maintained Nagendra's innocence regarding the charges. Nagendra also expressed a desire to resign as an MLA to more effectively challenge his detractors. His resignation marks a significant political development in Karnataka, highlighting the ongoing scrutiny of government officials and the intense political battles between the ruling Congress and the opposition.
