Kate Middleton’s sporty style, from tennis whites to winter bandy gear

Princess Charlotte may be the British royal family’s next sports star. At 11, she is already enthusiastic about gymnastics, ballet, running, rugby and netball, and she recently joined a competitive netball team that travels around England for tournaments.

Her mother, Kate Middleton, shares her interest in the sport. Kate played netball at school and sometimes practices throwing with her daughter at home. At royal sporting events, she has also made athletic clothing part of her public style, balancing practical movement with a polished appearance.

In 2021, at an event organized by the Lawn Tennis Association, Kate went onto the court in a navy sports jacket, a matching tennis skirt and white trainers. She tied back her long hair in a ponytail, keeping the outfit functional without losing its neat, elegant character.

Later that year, during a visit to City of Derry Rugby Club in Northern Ireland, she played rugby in an all-black sports outfit. The fitted top, ankle-length trousers and black trainers created a streamlined look while remaining practical for the field.

Kate also chose a simple black-and-white outfit when she visited a youth tennis program at Wimbledon in 2018. As patron of the All England Lawn Tennis Club, she played with the children in a white high-collar sports jacket and black trousers with broad white stripes. During a visit to Stockholm with Prince William that year, she tried bandy in cold weather wearing a black shearling coat, skinny trousers, ankle boots, a gray-and-black pom-pom hat and a burgundy scarf.
