Katherine residents gather en masse to protest rolling youth crime spree

Dozens of Katherine residents gathered on the town's main street to voice their fear and frustration over the escalating youth crime rate. The protest followed a recent incident where a group of young people were seen driving a stolen car dangerously through town for hours before crashing. Footage of the reckless driving circulated on social media. Police stated they understood the community's frustration but explained that initiating a pursuit could have endangered the public. Local businessman Ben Coutts organized a "coffee with a cop" event to channel community concerns. He emphasized the community's need for help and their fear of the ongoing costs associated with the crime. Natalie Ellis, involved with a youth justice project, urged the community to avoid blaming all Aboriginal people, noting that "95 percent of the kids in town are good." She identified school disengagement as a primary driver of youth crime and reminded attendees that Aboriginal people are also victims. Katherine Town Council members present stressed they were attending in a private capacity. Toni Tapp Coutts suggested the Northern Territory government consider implementing a temporary youth curfew, similar to measures in Alice Springs, to allow young people and their families to reflect on their actions.
