Kaunas boosts funding for successful basketball club Žalgiris

Kaunas municipality is set to provide an additional one million euros in funding to the Lithuanian basketball club Kauno "Žalgiris," recognizing their highly successful recent season. The club achieved a clean sweep of domestic titles and secured a commendable fifth place in the EuroLeague regular season, significantly boosting the city's profile.

Kaunas can already be called the sports center of Lithuania. Kauno „Žalgiris“ contributes significantly to this. The club has become part of the identity of the city and the entire Lithuania.

Kaunas has been a consistent supporter of the "Žalgiris" basketball center since 2020, allocating 2 million euros annually. This year's decision to increase funding reflects the team's impressive athletic achievements. Kaunas Mayor Visvaldas Matijošaitis highlighted the club's integral role in establishing Kaunas as Lithuania's sports center, stating that "Žalgiris" has become a part of the city's and the entire nation's identity.
