Kazakhstan's population as of June 1 announced

Kazakhstan's population has surpassed 20.5 million people as of June 1, 2026, according to the Bureau of National Statistics. The country recorded a total of 20,575,979 inhabitants, reflecting an increase of 76,157 individuals since the beginning of the year.

The most populous city, Almaty, now hosts 2,366,525 residents, an increase of 18,422 since January. The Turkestan Region also exceeds the 2 million mark with 2,146,670 people, though it experienced a decrease of 2,535 residents in the same period.

Several other regions and cities report populations over one million. Astana has 1,674,699 people, the Almaty Region has 1,611,588, Shymkent has 1,308,120, the Zhambyl Region has 1,213,556, and the Karaganda Region has 1,130,733.

Conversely, the least populated regions are the Ulytau Region with 218,169 residents, North Kazakhstan Region with 512,388, and Abai Region with 593,583.

Demographic shifts show a trend towards urbanization, with 13,168,438 Kazakhstanis living in urban areas, an increase of 83,328. Rural populations have seen a decrease, with 7,407,541 residents, a drop of 7,171.
