Kazakhstan takes first place in World Nomad Games medal standings after recount

A recount put Kazakhstan at the top of the medal table at the VI World Nomad Games, after organizers decided to count separately the medals won by each of three Kazakh athletes.

Askat Alagozov, press secretary to Kyrgyzstan’s President Sadyr Japarov, described the Games as a major sporting celebration held to a high standard. He singled out the kok-boru and zher-ulak competitions, where Kyrgyz and Kazakh teams displayed a high level of play.

Alagozov said the rivalry stayed on the field and that supporters from the two countries had no disagreements. He congratulated “our Kazakh brothers on their victory” while also praising Kyrgyz athletes for showing strength and skill.

He said the medal table represented only one part of the event. In his view, the Games’ main result was the staging of competitions in an atmosphere of mutual respect and fair play, alongside a display of unity between the Kyrgyz and Kazakh peoples.

The Games ran in Kyrgyzstan from August 31 to September 6. The opening ceremony took place at Bishkek Arena, while sporting, cultural and scientific events continued in the Issyk-Kul region. The final kokpar and kok-boru competitions were held in Cholpon-Ata on September 6, followed by the closing ceremony that evening.
