Kazhydromet warns residents of Astana, Almaty, and three other cities about air quality

Residents of Astana, Almaty, and three other Kazakh cities are advised to be aware of potential air quality issues due to unfavorable meteorological conditions. Kazhydromet, the national weather service, issued a warning for June 17, highlighting that pollution could accumulate near the ground.

The cities of Balkhash, Aktobe, and Almaty are expected to experience these conditions throughout Wednesday. Astana will see the unfavorable weather develop overnight. Unfavorable meteorological conditions are defined as a combination of factors, including calm weather, light winds, fog, and temperature inversions, which prevent pollutants from dispersing effectively.

Forecasters predict partly cloudy skies in Astana with a chance of rain and thunderstorms. Winds are expected to range from 2–7 m/s at night, increasing to 7–12 m/s during the day, with gusts up to 15 m/s. Temperatures will be around 16–18°C at night and reach a high of 31–33°C during the day.

In Almaty, similar partly cloudy conditions with light rain and thunderstorms are forecast. Winds will be 3–8 m/s, gusting up to 13 m/s. The city will experience intense heat, with nighttime temperatures between 21–23°C and daytime highs of 33–35°C. Aktobe is expected to be mostly clear with no precipitation and light winds of 1–6 m/s. Nighttime temperatures will be 17–19°C, with daytime highs reaching 30–32°C. Balkhash will also be partly cloudy without precipitation, with light northeasterly winds of 1–4 m/s. Nighttime temperatures will be 22–24°C, and daytime highs will be 31–33°C. Kostanay anticipates rain and thunderstorms during the day, with fog possible at night and in the morning. Winds will be 4–9 m/s, and temperatures will range from 16–18°C at night to 28–30°C during the day.
