Kazlų Rūda lifts emergency situation after storm damage eases

Kazlų Rūda has lifted the emergency situation declared after a storm tore through the Lithuanian municipality.

At a meeting of the municipal emergency operations center, officials concluded that the main threats to residents’ safety and the provision of essential services had decreased. They also said the measures needed to manage the emergency at the municipal level were no longer necessary.

Deputy Mayor Justinas Kazla said assistance from the Ministry of National Defence had continued through Aug. 31. Some isolated electricity disruptions remained across the municipality, but officials said their scale did not justify extending the emergency regime. Responsible institutions and service providers will handle the remaining problems through ordinary procedures.

According to the electricity distribution operator ESO, six outages affecting 15 customers were recorded in Kazlų Rūda on the evening of Sept. 3. The emergency situation began on Aug. 24 after the storm brought down numerous trees and power poles, severed electricity lines, disrupted water supplies, blocked roads and caused telephone outages in some areas.
