KBO League resumes play after heatwave-induced break

The KBO League is set to resume its season on August 11, concluding an unexpected "heatwave break" that halted games from August 5-9 due to extreme temperatures across South Korea. The league's hiatus, the second-longest in its history after a COVID-19 related suspension in 2021, saw 25 scheduled games canceled, adding to 5 previously postponed matches, bringing the total to 30.

To mitigate the impact of the heat, all games will now commence at 7 p.m. local time, regardless of the day of the week. This adjustment aims to protect players and fans from the intense summer heat, though the start time may revert to the usual 6:30 p.m. on weekdays if temperatures decrease significantly.

Rescheduled games are planned for September, but the primary concern for teams is regaining match sharpness after the extended break. Teams like Kia Tigers and NC Dinos, who finished their last games on July 31, face a nearly ten-day layoff, raising concerns about their ability to quickly adapt back to competitive play.

The unexpected pause adds a new layer of intrigue to the already tight pennant race. Leaders KT Wiz must maintain their momentum, while second-place Samsung Lions and third-place LG Twins aim to capitalize on the break for regrouping. Fourth-place Doosan Bears, who have been on a strong run, also pose a significant threat.

Furthermore, teams must now contend with the upcoming absence of key players called up for the Asian Games. Doosan will lose its top two pitchers, Kwak Bin and Choi Min-seok. KT will see three pitchers, including Soh Hyun-jun, Oh Won-seok, and Park Young-hyun, depart for the national team. Kia, currently leading the league in home runs with 33, will have to play without its MVP-caliber player, Kim Do-young. These player call-ups add another strategic challenge for managers navigating the crucial final stretch of the season.
