Keiko Fujimori sworn in as Peru's president, vows to defend sovereignty and democracy

Keiko Fujimori officially assumed the presidency of Peru for the 2026-2031 term, marking a significant return for the Fujimori political movement. She took the oath of office in a ceremony before Congress, vowing to uphold the constitution and laws, and to protect the physical and moral integrity of all Peruvians, particularly the historically marginalized.

"I swear that I will fulfill and enforce the Constitution and laws of Peru. I will watch over the physical and moral integrity of all Peruvians, especially those who have been historically postponed," Fujimori proclaimed, emphasizing her commitment to defending sovereignty, freedom, and democracy. She also highlighted the Catholic Church's role in national identity and pledged to foster a "secure, prosperous, and united" nation.

Prior to her inauguration, Fujimori held bilateral meetings with international delegates, including Spain's King Felipe VI and eight Latin American leaders. Following the ceremony, she was presented with the presidential sash. Her immediate plans include delivering her first address to the nation to outline her administration's key policies, walking to the Government Palace for a luncheon with invited delegations, and swearing in her cabinet ministers in the afternoon. Key appointments include Luis Galarreta as Prime Minister, Carlos Espá for Foreign Affairs, and Elmer Cuba for Economy and Finance.
