Kennedy Center Board Tries New Tactic to Add Trump's Name After Renaming Bid Blocked

The board of Washington's Kennedy Center is making another attempt to associate the institution with Donald Trump, this time through a workaround after a court blocked a direct renaming. The board approved a measure to inscribe "Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump" on the building's facade, to be placed below the current "John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts" signage.

In addition to the facade inscription, the board also voted to rename the center's plaza "Donald Trump Plaza" and to close the center for two years for renovations. This follows a previous board decision in December to rename the center "Trump-Kennedy Center," which was subsequently halted by a federal judge in May. The judge ruled that changing the name without congressional approval was illegal and ordered the removal of "Trump" from the building and official materials, also halting the planned two-year closure.

The board's latest actions are seen as an effort to bypass the court's order and relevant laws that prohibit adding new plaques or memorials. However, the proposed renovations and closure still require approval from the same judge who previously blocked the renaming. The Kennedy Center is obligated to submit the new board resolution to the judge by next week.

Trump, who took control of the board by appointing his allies shortly after taking office, has been engaged in a "culture war" with progressive elements. The Kennedy Center, established in memory of President John F. Kennedy after his assassination in 1963, now faces a renewed push to incorporate Trump's name. Paolo Zampolli, a former model agent and a Trump confidant on the board, believes that adding Trump's name will significantly boost the center's popularity as a tourist destination.
