Kenya highlights "crucial" military partnership with U.S. against African threats

Kenyan President William Ruto has underscored the "crucial" military partnership between African countries and the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), emphasizing its importance in addressing diverse threats across the continent. He stated that Africa continues to work closely with AFRICOM to repel transnational threats, disrupt extremist organizations, and coordinate emergency and humanitarian assistance.

President Ruto made these remarks following a meeting in Nairobi with AFRICOM Commander General Dagvin Anderson and the U.S. Chargé d'Affaires in Kenya, Susan Burns. Ruto highlighted that this partnership is vital for the continent, as peace, stability, and security are fundamental prerequisites for accelerated development, regional integration, intra-regional trade, and overall prosperity.

Kenya and the U.S. agreed in February to strengthen their cooperation in combating regional and global influence of jihadist groups such as Al Shabab and the Islamic State (IS). Kenya's strategic location and economic policies have positioned it as a stabilizing force in the Horn of Africa and a key partner for Western nations.

Simultaneously, Kenya maintains robust diplomatic and economic ties with China, which has become a major partner in infrastructure, trade, investment, and technology. China has financed significant transportation projects in Kenya over the past decade, illustrating the country's multifaceted international relationships.
