Kerr caps 'great two weeks' with Commonwealth Games gold on home soil

Scotland's Josh Kerr delivered a dominant performance to win the men's mile at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, crossing the finish line in 3 minutes 54.12 seconds. He comfortably finished ahead of Australia's Cameron Myers and Kenya's Timothy Cheruiyot. The world record holder celebrated with the home crowd as he completed his victory lap at the Scotstoun Stadium, a venue where he has competed since childhood.

Kerr's triumph on home soil capped off a remarkable two weeks for the athlete. He had shattered the 27-year-old world mile record just prior, achieving a time of 3:42.66 at the London Diamond League meeting. This latest win, in front of a roaring home crowd, was particularly meaningful for the 28-year-old, who described it as "everything I want to do."

I had some fantastic runners outside me, so that box was always going to open up once everything started to move a little bit. It was just about staying patient, not panicking, and knowing there was going to be space there over the last 200 metres. I just had to take my time and work my way through the box a little bit. That's racing.

The men's mile event itself marked a significant return to the Commonwealth Games program, having been absent for 60 years. Its last appearance was in 1966. Kerr's victory not only added a prestigious gold medal to his collection but also highlighted the resurgence of this classic track event on the international stage.

To have a bit of time to enjoy it in the last 100m is a memorable experience for me. To do that in front of a home crowd is everything I want to do. It's been a great two weeks, and I'm glad I'm able to perform on the big days.
