Kevin Gausman shines in Cubs debut, pitches 7 solid innings in 6-4 win over Royals

Kevin Gausman made an immediate impact in his first start for the Chicago Cubs, delivering exactly the performance the team hoped for when acquiring him. The veteran right-hander pitched seven strong innings on Friday, leading the Cubs to a 6-4 win against the Kansas City Royals.

Gausman, who arrived from Toronto last week, surrendered an RBI single in the first inning and a solo home run in the fifth. However, he largely kept the Royals' offense in check, retiring 12 of 13 batters at one point. He finished the outing allowing just two earned runs on four hits and one walk, improving his season record to 6-10.

The Cubs' offense gave Gausman the necessary cushion. In the second inning, Seiya Suzuki hit a two-run single, following an RBI single by Pete Crow-Armstrong. Chicago scored a total of four runs against Daniel Lynch IV, who was pressed into starting duty due to injuries in the Royals' rotation, having previously only pitched in relief this season.

Chicago's bullpen also contributed to securing the win. Caleb Thielbar allowed two runs in the eighth inning before Trent Thornton entered to escape the jam, getting Nick Loftin to fly out with the tying run on first base. Jacob Webb then closed out the game cleanly in the ninth for his seventh save.
