KEX is a Hotel in the Old Cooperative Building

A new hotel, KEX Þingeyri, has opened its doors in the Westfjords region of Iceland, breathing new life into the historic former cooperative society building in Þingeyri. Kristinn Vilbergsson, one of the hotel's owners, sees immense potential in the area, stating, "Buildings can always find new roles." He believes the Westfjords represent largely undeveloped land in terms of tourism, offering ample opportunities for innovation.

The hotel's location is highlighted for its dramatic natural scenery and unique appeal. Vilbergsson notes that many people in Reykjavik have never visited the Westfjords, and for international tourists, the region offers exciting and interesting landscapes. The former Hótel Sandafell has been transformed under the KEX brand, occupying the distinctive, arched building that once housed the Dyrafjörður Cooperative Society's shop.

Upon entering the KEX Þingeyri, visitors are greeted by a spacious dining and common area situated in the former retail space. The hall features robust concrete pillars and offers a good view of the fjord. The owners are keen to leverage the region's natural beauty and untapped potential to create a unique hospitality experience.
