Key Dates in Austria’s 2026-27 School Year

Austria’s 2026-27 school calendar offers an early reminder that the next break will arrive not long after classes begin. Schools in Vienna, Lower Austria, and Burgenland reopen on September 7, while students elsewhere return on September 14.

The eastern states will therefore have the latest possible start allowed under the School Time Act, which places their opening day on the first Monday of September. The school year will also end on different dates: July 2 in the east and July 9 in the west.

The first longer break comes with the autumn holidays, running from October 24 through All Souls’ Day on November 2. Because November 2 falls on a Monday, students will have 10 days off. The Immaculate Conception holiday on December 8 falls on a Tuesday, allowing schools to create a long weekend if they designate December 7 as an autonomous school day. Christmas holidays run from December 24 to January 6.

Semester holidays will take place from February 1 to 7 in Vienna and Lower Austria, from February 8 to 14 in Burgenland and Carinthia, and from February 15 to 21 in Upper Austria, Styria, Salzburg, Tyrol, and Vorarlberg. Easter holidays are uniform nationwide, from March 20 to 29.

The written Central Matura begins on May 5 with German. Italian follows on May 7, mathematics on May 10, English on May 11, Latin on May 12, French on May 13, and Spanish and minority languages on May 14. Greek examinations conclude the schedule on May 21. Pentecost Monday, May 17, is the only remaining Pentecost holiday, while Corpus Christi on May 27 precedes the final stretch of classes.
