Key things to know as 2026 WAFCON kicks off in Morocco

Morocco is set to host the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) starting Sunday, with 16 national teams competing for the continental title and berths in the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil. This marks Morocco's third consecutive time hosting the prestigious tournament.

The opening day will feature Algeria against Senegal, followed by hosts Morocco playing Kenya. Defending champions Nigeria, known as the Super Falcons, commence their campaign on Tuesday against Malawi. Nigeria is aiming to extend their record with an 11th WAFCON championship.

The tournament structure includes 16 teams divided into four groups of four. The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals. This competition is crucial as it also serves as Africa's sole qualification pathway for the 2027 Women's World Cup, granting automatic qualification to the four semi-finalists and two intercontinental play-off spots for quarter-final losers.

Nigeria enters the tournament as the highest-ranked African women's team and a strong favorite. Other leading contenders include hosts Morocco, 2022 champions South Africa, and Zambia, spearheaded by the talented Barbra Banda. Matches will be held across five stadiums in Rabat and Casablanca, with the final scheduled for August 16.
