Nigeria Boosts Commonwealth Games Athlete Bonuses

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has significantly boosted the financial incentives for Nigerian athletes competing in the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. The revised reward structure aims to provide greater motivation for Team Nigeria. Under the new package, gold medalists will receive a total of $10,000, comprising a $5,000 instant cash reward and $5,000 deposited directly into their bank accounts. Silver medalists are set to receive $5,000 ($2,000 instant cash, $3,000 bank deposit), while bronze medalists will get $3,000 ($1,000 instant cash, $2,000 bank deposit). NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko stated that the initial reward for gold was $8,000, but he decided to increase the instant cash component after meeting the team. Dikko confirmed that three gold medalists from Friday had already received the new $10,000 amount, and recent medalists received their instant cash payments. Coaches will also benefit, receiving $5,000 if their athletes win gold. Athletes are receiving a daily allowance of $200, and coaches $250. Special bonuses are also available for exceptional circumstances, such as an on-the-spot reward given to Rilwan Idris to encourage a push for gold.
