U.S. military bases in the Middle East serve as critical hubs for American forces, supporting a wide array of missions from logistics and pre-positioning of assets to refueling and direct combat operations. These installations have become focal points in the ongoing conflict between Iran and the United States, with Tehran frequently targeting them.

Elizabeth Dent, a senior fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, explained that while Iran accuses Gulf states of allowing the U.S. to use these bases for attacks, the assertion that all bases are inherently offensive is inaccurate. However, the strategic importance of these locations means they are increasingly viewed as targets by Iran.

Bahrain hosts the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet and its Central Command headquarters, utilizing a deep-water port capable of accommodating large vessels like aircraft carriers. The U.S. Navy has maintained a presence there since 1948. In Iraq, American troops are stationed in the Kurdistan region as part of the U.S.-led coalition against the Islamic State group, primarily at Erbil airport and al-Harir air base, with the coalition mission set to conclude by the end of September. Iraqi groups have launched over 600 attacks on U.S. facilities during the war.

Jordan houses U.S. troops on what both countries describe as Jordanian bases, including Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, which is equipped with advanced fighter jets and air defense systems. This location has become more significant due to Iran's growing missile and drone capabilities. Kuwait also maintains a substantial U.S. military presence, a legacy of American support following Iraq's invasion in 1990.
