KFOR Commander Discusses Kosovo Security with Serb List Leader

The commander of the NATO-led Kosovo Force (KFOR), Turkish Major General Özkan Ulutaş, held discussions with Zlatan Elek, the leader of the Serb List, addressing the security landscape in northern Kosovo. The meeting served as a platform to exchange views on critical issues, including the current security situation and the progressive implementation of KFOR's optimized posture.

The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange views on a number of issues, including the security situation in northern Kosovo and the ongoing implementation of the announced process to optimise KFOR’s posture.

According to a press release, Ulutaş highlighted that KFOR's optimization process is a response to an improved security situation in Kosovo. He emphasized that this transition is gradual, conditions-based, and reversible should developments negatively impact lasting security in Kosovo or regional stability. The General affirmed KFOR's readiness to respond to any relevant events in line with its United Nations mandate, ensuring it remains well-equipped and strategically positioned.

He reiterated that this process will be carried out gradually. It is conditions-based and can be reversed, if warranted by relevant developments that may affect lasting security in Kosovo and regional stability.

Furthermore, KFOR reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the Visoki Decani Monastery, a Serbian Orthodox site, affirming its role as the first responder for the monastery's security. The press release also noted that the gradual withdrawal of KFOR's presence from the main bridge in Mitrovica has commenced. This process is in its initial phase, with the NATO-led mission set to maintain a robust presence in Mitrovica North and the broader northern Kosovo region upon its finalization.
