Kim Jong Un inspects missile tests aboard North Korean destroyer Kang Kon

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un observed the test firing of a strategic cruise missile and assessed the combat systems of the newly constructed naval destroyer Kang Kon. State media reported that the tests, conducted on Friday, evaluated the warship's capabilities in target detection, information processing, integrated firepower, naval guns, automatic cannons, and electronic warfare.

During the assessment, Kim Jong Un was briefed on the vessel's weapons evaluation program before witnessing the missile launch and other system tests. According to the report, Kim praised recent advancements in weapons development and urged further efforts to enhance North Korea's war deterrence and combat readiness.

Kim has directed officials to complete trials for the Kang Kon and commission it into naval service within two months. This move is part of a larger naval modernization initiative, which includes plans to construct two warships of the Kang Kon's class annually over the next five years, as well as developing larger 10,000-ton warships. The Kang Kon itself underwent repairs last year after partially capsizing during its launch ceremony.

North Korea has increasingly emphasized naval development, a sector Kim has identified as the weakest branch of its armed forces. This focus aims to bolster its military capabilities and project power.
