Kim Min-jae on the bench, Hwang Hee-chan left out as Bundesliga Korean derby falls through

The much-anticipated Bundesliga meeting between South Korean teammates Kim Min-jae and Hwang Hee-chan never got off the ground. Neither player appeared in Bayern Munich's 0-0 draw with Schalke at Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen on Saturday.

Kim, who had started every official match for Bayern this season, was named on the bench but did not enter the game. Dayot Upamecano and Jonathan Tah instead played the entire match together in central defense. It was Kim's first absence of the season.

Hwang did not make Schalke's squad. He joined the club on loan from English Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sept. 2, just before the summer transfer window closed. The move had raised expectations of a meeting between the two 1996-born South Korean national-team teammates.

That matchup was ultimately canceled before kickoff. Bayern controlled the game with 83% possession, but Schalke held on as the teams finished without a goal.
