Kim Min-seok Widens Lead in Democratic Party Leadership Race

Kim Min-seok has taken a significant lead in the race for the leadership of South Korea's Democratic Party, ahead of Jeong Cheong-rae by 8.4 percentage points in cumulative polling. Kim secured victories in crucial regional contests held in Honam (Jeonju and North Jeolla Province) and Seoul/Gyeonggi, extending his advantage over Jeong. His decisive win in the Honam region, considered a key battleground, proved instrumental in building his lead. The party is set to elect its next leader on August 17th at a national convention in Daejeon. The final results will be determined by a combination of delegate votes and public opinion surveys. In the Seoul and Gyeonggi regional primaries on August 16th, Kim garnered 46.66% of the votes, narrowly surpassing Jeong's 46.28%. Song Young-gil trailed with 7.05%. Kim's cumulative vote share stands at 49.91%, with Jeong at 41.51% and Song at 8.58%. Kim Min-seok emphasized his commitment to leading the party to victory and ushering in a 'K Golden Age,' while Jeong Cheong-rae pledged to ensure the success of the current government, and Song Young-gil aimed to be at the forefront of changing inter-Korean relations. In the race for the supreme council positions, Choi Min-hee regained the lead in cumulative votes.
