King Charles III opens 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

Glasgow, Scotland, is hosting the 23rd Commonwealth Games, officially opened by King Charles III. The 10-day event brings together around 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories who will compete for 215 gold medals across 10 main sports and six para-sports.

This marks Glasgow's second time hosting the Commonwealth Games, having previously done so 12 years ago. The opening ceremony, attended by Queen Camilla, featured a memorable entrance for King Charles III, who emerged from a TARDIS, a time machine prop inspired by the British science fiction television series Doctor Who. The ceremony unfolded within the Hydro Arena, a venue capable of holding 14,000 spectators in the city center.

In his address to the athletes, King Charles III celebrated their dedication and talent, stating, "Your perseverance is an inspiration to us all, and we look forward to the successes you will achieve in the coming days." He also emphasized unity and sustainability, adding, "As we share our love for sport and our planet, let us build a harmonious and sustainable future for our families and for each other." The King formally declared the Games open with great joy.
