King Frederik Looks Forward to Meeting and Helping Norway’s New King

King Frederik of Denmark said Norway’s new monarch, King Haakon, should have time to settle into his role after the death of King Harald.

I remember him as a loving person, my uncle.

Speaking at the opening of the “Space for Inspiration” conference in Copenhagen, Frederik remembered Harald as “a loving person, my uncle.” He also said he had full confidence that Haakon would take on his new responsibilities.

“He needs time to establish himself as a person in his new role as king,” Frederik said. He added that he looked forward to meeting and helping Norway’s new king “in every way.”

King Harald died at Rikshospitalet in Oslo on Friday at the age of 89. The Danish royal household said Frederik had sent Haakon a condolence letter, describing Harald’s importance to Frederik’s mother and family and recalling his warmth, calm and humor.

Frederik and Queen Mary will attend Harald’s state funeral at Oslo Cathedral on Sept. 9. Their attendance means that a planned state visit to Belgium, scheduled for Sept. 8 to 10, will be postponed.
