King Haakon to Take Oath as Mourners Pay Respects in the Palace Chapel

King Haakon will enter Norway’s parliament at 1 p.m. Tuesday to make the constitutional pledge required of a new monarch. He will be accompanied by Queen Mette-Marit and Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra.

Queen Sonja and Prince Sverre Magnus will watch the oath-taking from the parliamentary chamber rather than enter alongside Haakon. Although the throne passes immediately to the first person in the line of succession when a king dies, the Constitution requires the new king to appear before parliament and formally promise to uphold it.

The ceremony follows public mourning for King Harald V, who died quietly early Friday morning. After his coffin was taken to the Palace Chapel, members of the royal family visited the Palace Square to see the large collection of flowers and greet people who had come to pay tribute.

They were met with spontaneous applause and the national song. The family appeared visibly moved, and Princess Märtha Louise seemed to wipe away tears. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre also visited the square privately with his grandchildren, read messages and spoke with people gathered there.
