King’s College Lagos concessioned to old boys’ association

King’s College Lagos is set for a major change in ownership and management after Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Education directed that the school be concessioned to the King’s College Old Boys Association, known as KCOBA.

The directive, contained in an official letter received by the Parents and Teachers Association, ordered the handover process to begin immediately. It also called for a transition committee to complete the process within six months. After the handover, the Federal Government would stop funding the college, according to the PTA chairman, Peter Oluwaleye.

The ministry also directed the PTA to submit a list of staff who wished to remain employed by the Federal Civil Service Commission. The development was shared with the School-Based Management Committee and school staff, but the staff union responded by shutting the college and blocking entry and exit. Oluwaleye said unions nationwide had been informed and neighbouring schools could begin solidarity actions.

He warned that the shutdown could spread nationwide if the ministry did not provide a favourable response within a reasonable period. Oluwaleye also criticized the absence of prior consultation with parents, saying families needed to know the concession’s terms because their children had entered King’s College as a federal unity school. “Our children got admitted into KC as a unity school. They should have been allowed to graduate under the same terms,” he said.

The PTA chairman questioned whether six months was enough for such a major change and said the association would pursue lawful options to protect students’ interests. Parents were advised to keep preparing for the proposed September 13 resumption but delay buying perishable back-to-school items. The PTA said it would update them between Monday and Thursday on whether the school would reopen.
