Kirkwood wins in Washington under Trump's gaze, postponing Palou's title

Kyle Kirkwood captured victory at the inaugural IndyCar Grand Prix of Washington, significantly impacting the championship race. The win postponed the title celebrations for Spanish driver Álex Palou, who had a difficult race. Palou, who started from pole position on the urban circuit, ended up in 20th place due to various issues, including penalties and an accident.

Kirkwood's win, followed by Christian Lundgaard in second, means both drivers remain in contention for the championship title. Palou, a four-time IndyCar champion, still holds a substantial lead with three races remaining, but his advantage over Kirkwood has been reduced from 133 to 91 points. The championship could be decided next Saturday at the Milwaukee Mile.

The event, held around the National Mall, was attended by U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, who waved the green flag to start the race. The 1.7-mile circuit was designed to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States. Despite the festive occasion, Palou's performance was marred by a mistake involving the pit lane tire change and a late-race impact with a barrier, which damaged his front wing and further hampered his progress.
