Kissing Not Primary H. pylori Transmission Route, Doctor Explains

While many worry that kissing could transmit Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, a gastroenterologist has clarified that it is not the most common way the bacteria spreads. Dr. Chang Jing explained that while H. pylori can theoretically be transmitted through saliva, this route is rare in practice.

The primary transmission pathway for H. pylori is fecal-oral. This means the bacteria can spread through contaminated food or water if an infected person does not wash their hands properly after using the restroom. Therefore, maintaining good daily hygiene is crucial for preventing its spread.

Dr. Chang noted that couples often share meals, and the risk of infection can increase through shared food or water contaminated with the bacteria, potentially more so than through kissing. He stressed that instead of avoiding intimate contact like kissing, the priority for an infected individual should be to undergo prompt and complete eradication treatment.

He also recommended that close partners and family members who frequently share meals should undergo H. pylori screening. Early detection and eradication not only lower the risk of transmission to loved ones but also significantly reduce the future risk of developing stomach cancer, a known consequence of chronic H. pylori infection.
