KMT Denies Beijing's Alleged Drone Regulation Principles

The Kuomintang (KMT) party in Taiwan has vehemently denied media reports alleging that Beijing presented three principles for reviewing drone regulations. The party's Culture and Communications Committee Chairman, Chen Hsin-chuan, along with lawyer Yeh Ching-yuan, held a press conference to clarify the KMT's stance.

Chen stated that the KMT's draft drone bill, submitted for review on July 14, explicitly outlines mechanisms for a stable drone industry and defense construction. He pointed to Articles 15 and 16, which include provisions for the procurement, production, maintenance, and training for military drones, directly refuting the claim that the bill promotes "using civilians to replace the military."

Addressing the alleged "time flexibility" that would delay legislation, Chen emphasized the bill's swift progress. It was submitted on July 14, had its first inquiry on July 16, and a public hearing is scheduled for the upcoming Thursday. Further review and clause-by-clause examination are planned for the following week, indicating a rapid legislative process.

Regarding the assertion of demanding "supply chain opportunities," Chen highlighted Article 11 of the KMT's bill, which prohibits the use of suppliers from "high-risk regions" and mandates security standards for drones. The definition of "high-risk regions" is to be determined by the Executive Yuan based on national security considerations. Chen stressed that the KMT's proposal clearly rejects high-risk supply chains.

Chen concluded by reiterating that the alleged "three principles" are not part of the KMT's draft bill. He asserted that the KMT's proposal aims to strengthen national defense, enhance drone capabilities, and promote the domestic drone industry, presenting a comprehensive and complete measure.
