KMT Legislator Weng Hsiao-ling Faces Record Backlash, Becomes Campaign Liability

Kuomintang legislator Weng Hsiao-ling is facing intense public scrutiny and widespread criticism, with recent online discussions showing an overwhelming negative sentiment rate of 87.4%. Her net favorability has dropped below that of KMT Chairperson Jaw Shaw-kong, positioning her as a significant challenge for the party's electoral prospects.

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has seized on Weng's controversial actions, particularly her stance on budget proposals, framing her as a symbol of what they deem irresponsible legislative behavior. The DPP is using her as a focal point in their campaign strategy, urging voters to reject candidates who support her actions. Party insiders suggest that the public anger generated by Weng's approach has surpassed previous controversies, such as the "De-list Wu Ssu-huai" campaign in 2020.

According to internal DPP public opinion analysis, Weng's online discussion volume has been substantial, rivaling that of Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an and significantly exceeding that of Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu. However, her positive mentions are a mere 3.1%, resulting in a net favorability score of negative 84.3%. This starkly contrasts with Chiang Wan-an's 13.7% positive rating.

Critics point to specific instances, such as Weng's proposal to freeze the budget for cultural affairs and her attempt to cut the Presidential Office's discretionary fund. These actions have reportedly led to canceled orders for sheltered workshops and have been perceived by some as undermining essential government functions. The DPP argues that Weng's behavior, characterized by what they call "blindly freezing budgets," has alienated the public and is becoming a "mirror" reflecting negatively on KMT candidates, forcing them to confront voter dissatisfaction.
