KMT Praises 'Beneficial Taiwan Ten Measures' for Peace; DPP Denounces: Cooperating with CCP to Deceive Taiwanese People

The recent announcement of China's "10惠台 measures" has ignited a fierce political debate in Taiwan, exposing the deep ideological chasm between the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the opposition Kuomintang (KMT). KMT Chairperson Zheng Liwen lauded the measures, calling them a "great goodwill" and a "big gift package" from Beijing following her meeting with Chinese officials. She instructed the party to actively engage with these policies, framing them as an opportunity for the Taiwanese people to experience the "dividends of peace."

However, the DPP vehemently rejected this interpretation. The party's China Affairs Department lambasted the KMT's stance, labeling the "10惠台 measures" as a mere recycling of previous, largely ineffective, unification policies. They accused the KMT of being either ignorant of China's true intentions or complicit in a deliberate attempt to "deceive the Taiwanese people." The DPP stressed that China consistently ties economic exchanges to political demands, such as accepting the "1992 Consensus" or opposing "Taiwanese independence," turning trade into a political tool susceptible to arbitrary restrictions and sanctions.

Furthermore, the DPP pointed out the stark contradiction between China's economic overtures and its ongoing military provocations. Despite offering "goodwill" through economic incentives, Beijing continues its aggressive military activities, including incursions by warplanes and naval vessels near Taiwan. This dual approach, the DPP argues, undermines any genuine trust and renders the so-called "goodwill" suspect. The party emphasized that Taiwan needs a stable, reciprocal, and sustainable basis for cross-strait relations, not a deceptive package that ignores fundamental risks and Beijing's persistent military threat. The KMT's eagerness to embrace these measures, according to the DPP, plays directly into Beijing's hands, potentially misleading the public and downplaying the significant risks involved.
