Ko Woo-seok Suspended 10 Games for Glove Violation, MLB Return in Doubt

South Korean pitcher Ko Woo-seok faces a significant setback in his Major League Baseball aspirations after receiving a 10-game suspension for violating rules against foreign substances on his glove. The suspension, effective retroactively from July 26, was confirmed by the Star Tribune, a local Minnesota newspaper.

The incident occurred during a minor league game on July 25, where Ko, recently demoted to the Triple-A St. Paul Saints, was brought in as a relief pitcher. As he approached the mound, umpires inspected his glove and discovered an object inside. Despite Ko's protests, he was immediately ejected from the game without throwing a single pitch, and his glove was confiscated.

Major League Baseball has strictly enforced rules against foreign substances since 2021, aiming to prevent pitchers from gaining an unfair advantage by increasing grip and spin on the ball. Violators typically face immediate ejection and a lengthy suspension, commonly 10 games.

Ko Woo-seok is reportedly not planning to appeal the suspension and will accept the penalty. Having signed with the San Diego Padres after the 2023 season and later traded to the Minnesota Twins, he made his MLB debut on July 10. However, his time in the majors has been brief and challenging, with a 9.00 ERA after just four appearances, leading to his recent demotion. This suspension adds another layer of difficulty to his potential return to the big leagues.
