Kolkata police summon aide of TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee over party-office scuffle

Kolkata Police have summoned Sumit Roy, personal assistant to Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee, over a scuffle at the party leader’s office. The dispute concerned the removal of a billboard carrying Trinamool Congress signage.

Investigating officers from Shakespeare Sarani police station asked Roy to appear at noon on Monday. Police served the notice at his New Alipore residence on Saturday evening, saying his statement was needed as part of the investigation.

Officers had previously questioned Banerjee, TMC Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien and Roy over the August 27 incident. Police named Banerjee as an accused in two first information reports. O’Brien and former MLA Humayun Kabir are among the other people named in the cases.

The charges include obstructing government officials in the discharge of their duties, unlawful assembly, assault and harassment of women personnel. Kolkata Municipal Corporation personnel dismantled the billboard, which stood on an iron structure facing the road on the top floor of the Camac Street building, after police entered the office.

O’Brien alleged that police entered with an “illegal” notice, assaulted senior leaders and heckled party supporters and office staff. He called reports that private guards had resisted the operation “fake news.” Police said 14 people have so far been arrested in connection with the incident.
