President Vladimir Putin has declared that Russian forces have achieved a strategic victory with the full capture of Konstantinovka, a city in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region. Putin emphasized the city's importance as a critical transportation and industrial center within the Donbas.

Speaking from a temporary command post, Putin stated on Friday that the seizure of Konstantinovka holds significant strategic value for Russia's ongoing military operations in Ukraine. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov had previously announced the complete takeover of the city, as reported by RIA Novosti.

Putin further asserted that since the beginning of 2026, Russian forces have gained control of 133 settlements and more than 3,000 square kilometers of territory across the Donbas and Novorossiya regions. During the same address, he also commented on the progress of establishing a security buffer zone along Russia's border with Ukraine.

According to Putin, the expansion of this buffer zone, which encompasses areas in Kharkiv, Sumy, and Dnipropetrovsk, is a direct response to escalating Ukrainian attacks on Russian civilian facilities. He stated that the greater the enemy's efforts to strike civilian targets, the larger the security buffer zone Russia must construct in the adjacent territories. The stated aim of this buffer zone is to enhance the protection of civilians and infrastructure in Russia's border regions.
