Koper Theatre Announces New Season with Six Premieres and Leadership Transition

The Koper Theatre in Slovenia is set to launch its new season, promising a dynamic program that includes six premieres and a varied subscription offering for adults, children, and youth. The upcoming season is also significant as it heralds a change in leadership, with actor and theater creator Danijel Malalan scheduled to assume the role of director in December 2026, succeeding Katja Pegan after her long and successful tenure.

Curated by director Ivan Loboda, the season's program aims to engage with pressing contemporary issues, rather than avoid them. The selected plays focus on individuals striving to maintain closeness, dignity, and meaning in a world characterized by uncertainty, noise, and alienation. Among the premieres, "Ice Pictures" by Finnish playwright Kristian Smeds, directed by Loboda, stands out as a poignant contemporary European family drama. For enthusiasts of classic theater, a production of Samuel Beckett's "Waiting for Godot," directed by Jaka Ivanc, is scheduled, alongside a new interpretation of August Strindberg's "Miss Julie" by director Yulia Kristoforova.

The theater is also dedicating special attention to its younger audiences. In addition to popular children's subscription series, a new student subscription will be introduced, offering young people access to high-quality theatrical content and relevant social themes. The Koper Theatre for Children and Youth, known as Svetilnik, will continue its acclaimed work with performances for the youngest audiences.

Subscribers will have access not only to the four Koper premieres but also to selected performances from the broader Slovenian theater scene, including titles like "Café," "You Are an Animal!," "Life in the Theatre," "Orphans," and "Five Types of Silence." This diverse selection aims to showcase various aesthetic poetics and creative approaches, ensuring a rich and varied season for attendees. The theater highlighted that subscriptions for the 2026/2027 season are now open until June 20, emphasizing the subscription model as a way to foster a sense of community among theatergoers who value live art.
