Koperasi Tunas Muda celebrates six decades of success in property and community development

For over six decades, Koperasi Tunas Muda Sungai Ara Berhad (KTMSAB) has built a legacy of community empowerment and future-building, emerging as one of Malaysia's most successful cooperatives, especially in property development. Founded in 1963, KTMSAB began as an effort by community leaders to defend local land ownership rights and has since become a catalyst for socio-economic progress in areas like Sungai Ara, Relau, Sungai Nibong, Sungai Tiram, and Bayan Lepas in Penang.

KTMSAB's contributions to the local community are extensive. The cooperative has funded significant renovations and expansions for several mosques, including Masjid Al-Mustaghfirin, Masjid Umar Ibnu Al-Khattab, Masjid Al-Huda, and Masjid Al-Ittifaq. Beyond religious institutions, KTMSAB also provides business zakat (charitable donations) to mosques, suraus, schools, Quran classes, madrasahs, and underprivileged groups. Its support extends to the development of the Relau Health Clinic, Sungai Ara Agama School, Madrasah Uthmaniah, the Zakat Bayan Lepas Hemodialysis Centre, and the Sungai Ara Futsal Court.

Currently, KTMSAB manages 365 commercial rental units, encompassing retail spaces, shop lots, and offices in strategic locations across Penang. Since 1986, the cooperative has developed over 25 of its own housing projects and partnered on another 25 housing and commercial ventures through joint ventures. A notable community initiative is Laman Co-op City in Sungai Ara, a recreation space designed with community-friendly landscaping, recognized as the first Cooperative City landmark in Malaysia. KTMSAB is also involved in developing a commercial hub and corporate office tower near Penang International Airport, known as GBS Tower @ Penang Airport.

Further diversifying its portfolio, KTMSAB operates two petrol stations in Bayan Lepas, manages a hotel in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, and oversees a laundry business through its subsidiary, Tunas Harta Sdn. Bhd. The cooperative's commitment to excellence has been recognized with over 20 state and national awards and accolades since 1992, including a recent Merit Award for professional landscape design at the Malaysia Landscape Awards.
